In the name of God Amen. in the year of our Lord God 1547, the 27 day of June Edmund Newton of Halsechame being in good mind and perfect remembrance do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form as hereafter followeth. That is to say, first I bequeath my soul unto the hands of Almighty God and my body to be buried within my parish church of Halsechame. Also I give unto the church works of Halsesame 6s 8d and to the high altar for an altar charge 2s. Also I give unto John Newton two oxen which are in Richard Miller's hands, two mares whereof one [is] called the shorelock mare together, a bay filly which was of a mare called Brocke, two kine,^[1] two queys,^[2] two ewes, two pair of wain blades, a plough with that belongs it, a doublet and a jerkin. Also I give unto my wife Agnes Newton, over and besides her third, my best mare with her foal, Warker House in Kaingehame for the which I have paid four years rent next following, my best cow and six of my best gymmer hagges. Also I give unto Robert Applebie's children ofWyveseide every one a ewe and a lamb and a filly. Also I give unto William Lyileswith of Halsesame and his children four ewes and four lambs and two stottes,^[3] a buck skin doublet. Also I give unto Master John Constable a yearling colt stag^[4] which I bought of Christopher Hilyerde of Stringhame and to Master Robert Constable another colt. Also to the sacrament 12d. Also I give unto my shepherd to Sled my servant and to Agnes Jobson my maid servant every one a ewe lamb. Also whereas William Foxe of Sunder land oweth me 16s. the same I forgive him freely. Also I forgive Jervette Sampson 6s which I lent him. Also I give unto my wife and her assigns my lease of my farmhold. Also I will that Thomas Newton my son shall have all my land in North Dalton, William my son my house with all the appurtenances in Rumeswell in the which William Bird dwelleth to them and their heirs lawful and for default of heirs lawful every one of them to be heirs to other. The residue of all my goods not bequeathed herein I will that my children shall have that is to say my sons Thomas, William and Richard and my daughters Margaret, Elizabeth and Alison which six I ordain and make my whole executors of this my last will and testament and if any of them die, the rest to stand in full strength. Finally I ordain and make supervisors of this my last will and testament my well beloved friends John Fisher of Halsehame and John heron of Kangehame whom I require and pray and also charge them even as they shall make answer for me before God that they will see this my last will and testament in every condition and article to be fulfilled and to either of them for their painstaking I give £10 sterling. In witness and for the true performance of this my last will and testament that is my own deed I have here unto set my own hand the day and year first above written. These following are witnesses of the same: John Fisher, John Heron, Richard Ekyetson of Walsame, William Hewson of Halsame, John Hewlay and William Shecke of Halsame. moreover I will that Robert Doughbie of North Dalton shall have after my deceased my son Thomas Newton with his portion, Richard Elyotson of Walsame to have my son William Newton and his portion and John Fisher of Halsame to have my son Richard Newton with his portion, until they my children shall come to lawful years of discretion and be able to govern their portions themselves. Also I give unto my sister Jane Foxe of Sounderlandewyke in money £20 more. Witnesses of this are John Clerk and Peter Wright ofHalsame. On 26 August in the aforesaid year, the dean of Holdemess certified that he had proved the said will through John Fisher, Richard Eliotson, William Hewson and John Hewson, named in the said will and administration of the goods of the said deceased was granted to Robert Doghbie of North Dalton, John Fisher and Richard Elleson of Wamhame, tutors or curators of Thomas Newton, William Newton and Richard Newton and Margaret, Elizabeth and Alice children of the said deceased, executors named in the same will.
